About This Plant
Eureka Lemon (Citrus limon Eureka) is a dwarf citrus tree variety that originated in California and is one of the most widely grown commercial lemon varieties. Indoors it produces glossy, oval, dark green aromatic leaves, and actual yellow lemons that are edible and true to type. With enough direct light it can produce flowers and fruit year-round.

Common Questions
How often should I water the Eureka Lemon?
Water when the top two inches of soil feel dry. In summer outdoors this may be every three to five days. Indoors in a Canadian winter, every seven to ten days. Never let it dry out completely as leaves yellow and drop. Never leave it in standing water. Our indoor plant watering guide shows how to check moisture correctly.
How do I pollinate it indoors?
When the fragrant white flowers are open, use a small clean paintbrush to transfer pollen between flowers by gently brushing the centre of each flower. Do this on several consecutive days when flowers are open. Outdoors insects do this naturally. Successful pollination is indicated by the base of the flower swelling into a tiny green fruit.
Is the Eureka Lemon toxic to cats and dogs?
Yes. The ASPCA confirms Citrus spp. is toxic to cats, dogs, and horses. The leaves, peel, and essential oils contain psoralens and limonene causing vomiting, diarrhea, depression, and photosensitivity. Keep it in a room that pets cannot access. Fallen fruits and leaves are also a risk.
When should I move it outdoors in Canada?
Move it outdoors after the last frost date in your area, typically late May in Ontario and Quebec. Start it in partial shade and transition to full sun over one to two weeks to prevent sunscorch. Keep it outside until September or until nighttime temperatures regularly drop below 10 degrees C.
Will it fruit indoors in winter?
Fruit already on the tree when it comes indoors will continue ripening slowly through winter. New fruit production slows but does not stop in a south-facing window. The most prolific fruiting happens outdoors in summer. Read our tips on keeping plants alive in winter for the transition indoors.
